On this page >> Definitive decision to be made on Friday morning about race
Tour Languedoc Roussillon 2013
As soon as any further information is available, it will be posted here.
The race is confirmed to go ahead in a shortened version from Saturday until Wednesday (one stage shorter). The first stage will be from Lezignan Corbieres to Le Barcares, which is on the coast, a 122km stage. Some teams have pulled out - specifically, Boels Dolmans and Rabo Women, whilst others will see how the first stage is run and make their decision later about whether to continue.
Despite the affirmation by the organiser that a shortened race will take place, teams have been leaving the Carcassonne area to return home. The prefecture approved the shortened race on Thursday evening. But a final decision will be taken on Friday morning (time unknown)
The organiser is now confident he has a last minute sponsor. He says the race will start in Lezignans Corbieres on Saturday...
The organiser claims he has a possible sponsor and that the race may start Saturday.
After the debacle of a late cancellation in 2012, women's cycling is once again suffering from the cancellation of the Tour of Languedoc Rousillion. A source within the organisation divulged that there are insufficient funds to run the race.
This explains why, despite the late hour, some, if not all, hotel lists were not yet released by the organiser. Speculatively, the rooms probably had not been booked.
Police and race security and planning meetings had taken place, as recently as last weekend. At the time, the organiser was claiming to be overwhelmed with workload, preparations, but did not mention that there was a deficit in funds.
All teams were either en route, or in Carcassonne already on Thursday, when the announcement was made. Many with little rest after arriving in Europe from China on Tuesday morning.
The race was also cancelled, albeit with more notice (a few weeks) in 2012. Surely the UCI should ensure that the organiser has funds before making dates in the UCI calendar again.
