Tour cancelled at last minute : 14:00hrs Europe, Thursday     *edited Friday 17 May to give context for time of posting

After the debacle of a late cancellation in 2012, women's cycling is once again suffering from the cancellation of the Tour of Languedoc Rousillion. A source within the organisation divulged that there are insufficient funds to run the race.

This explains why, despite the late hour, some, if not all, hotel lists were not yet released by the organiser. Speculatively, the rooms probably had not been booked.

Police and race security and planning meetings had taken place, as recently as last weekend. At the time, the organiser was claiming to be overwhelmed with workload, preparations, but did not mention that there was a deficit in funds.

All teams were either en route, or in Carcassonne already on Thursday, when the announcement was made. Many with little rest after arriving in Europe from China on Tuesday morning.

The race was also cancelled, albeit with more notice (a few weeks) in 2012. Surely the UCI should ensure that the organiser has funds before making dates in the UCI calendar again.
