On this page >> Write-up Results Photos Day 1 Minsk Arena, Belarus Sarah Hammer (USA), qualified fastest, to give herself the best opportunity to become World Champion again for a 5th time. Hammer rode in a time of 3 minutes 30.206 to put herself in the gold medal ride against Australian Amy Cure. Cure fought back in the closing stages of her ride. Having completed the first 1km fastest, second kilometre, she dropped to 3rd before finishing fast to secure to ride against Hammer. Fighting for the bronze medal ride, will be Australian Annette Edmondson and Canadian Laura Brown. Brown missed out on a spot in the Canadian Pursuit team for the Olympics, so will be pleased with her medal opportunity. With fifteen women on the start list, notable names in with a chance of a medal were, Annette Edmondson and Amy Cure (Australia), World record holder Sarah Hammer (USA), Laura Brown (Canada) and Lisa Brennauer (Germany). Anna Nagirnaya (UKR), Anastaysia Chulkova (Russia) and Caroline Ryan (Ireland) Comments Shane Sutton (Australian Endurance Coach) was very happy with the qualification of his two riders. "It is a good start. With the men qualifying first as well it will be a good evening. We are off to a good start. It hasn't been easy. Both women have been a little unhealthy leading in and now they still have a few sniffles but it was a good start," said Sutton. Tanya Dubincoff (Canadian Endurance Coach) was very happy with the performance of her rider. "Laura has been around forever. She is, one of those athletes that has been in the mix for a while. She was our alternate rider at the Olympics, she has definitely shown that she has the talent. She has lots of experience travelling with the top team so she is ready to step up. This is not a shock for us. This is a bonus and signifies that she is world class. Our focus now is to get her to refocus, warm down and rest, so that she can come back and fight for a medal tonigh. She will then get ready for the team pursuit tomorrow," said Dubincoff. Dubincoff reflected on the post Olympic year and rebuilding teams and gaining funding, "What is interesting and unique about Canada, is that we are so in contact with the funding partners and they are only a phone call away. They are really in touch with team as a unit and the programme. We already have our commitment for next year and we are well down the planning route for the next four years. We feel we are ready to move forward. This championship does however feel like an extension of 2012 because it is so early. We are all a little bit fatigued. We have managed it well. This is a small period of time where we need to focus before the road season. We will get a small break before refocusing our energy for the rest of 2013 and into 2014," add Dubincoff.
