Florence 2013

Preview

The 2013 World Road Championships, return to Italy today. With the first event for women, the second running of the Team time trial, Specialized-lululemon will be looking to defend the inaugural title from 2012. Unbeaten thus far in 2013 and actually since 2011, the Specialized-lululemon team will be tough to beat on the fast flat course. Orica-AIS have struggled to maintain consistency this season. They were beaten by Rabo Women at the recent World Cup Team Time Trial in Sweden, but finished second at the Boels Holland Ladies Tour. Notably Marianne Vos was missing from the Rabo Womens team at the Dutch stage race, therefore the podium in Florence could be changed this year.

The final stage race of the year saw many challenges for the organisation and the riders. It has been the race that sets the tone for the World championships. Riders who perform well in Toscana nomally go well at Worlds. Although a number of riders are also keeping a low profile, maybe they are not ready to give away their true form just yet. One that did show she was ready, was 2012 Olympic and World road champion, Dutch superstar Marianne Vos. Vos won 2 stages of the tour and took the unofficial overall ahead of Emma Johansson and Anna van der Breggen. Notable in their ability to show good climing legs was Italian Rosella Ratto (Hitec Products UCK), Tatiana Guderzo (McCipollini Giordana Galassia) and Noemi Cantele (Bepink). The Dutch will have other good cards to play, Anna Van Der Breggen (Sengers Ladies) showed some good form on the hilly stage, she will be one to watch as well as Vos. German Claudia Hausler (Team Tibco - To The Top), will be supported by a number of strong riders, notably Trixi Worrack (Specialized Lululemon). The Russians will be hoping that Tatiana Antoshina (McCipollini Giordana Galassia) continues her good form. The Australians have a number of cards to play, Tiffany Cromwell (Orica-AIS) is selected along side Orica-AIS team mates, Shara Gillow and Amy Cure. Carlee Taylor (Lotto Belisol) could be there too. The Americans will be looking to Mara Abbott (winner of the 2013 Giro) and Evelyn Stevens (Specialized Lululemon) to be in the right position on the day. The Luxemburg team will be looking to their lone rider, Christine Majerus (Sengers), Canada will have their hopes on Joelle Numainville. If she can manage to get over the climbs.
