Stage 3 -Wild wins again

Leerdam 121.3km

Race Writeup

Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) won stage three of the Boels Ladies Tour in a crash marred final. Shelley Olds (TIBCO-To The Top) was second ahead of Lizzie Armitstead (Boels Dolmans)

The second stage was warm with a bit of wind on a course over dykes through the outskirts of Leerdam. The stage took a while to get settled and once it did a long break from Annemiek van Vleuten (Rabo Women) forged a gap ahead of the peloton. Her advantage never grew over a minute and with 10km to go she held a slender 25 second advantage over a charging peloton.

Specialized-Lululemon controlled the gap and in the final 10km they brought Van Vleuten back. With just over 5km to the line there was a large crash in the peloton which split the bunch in two but this didn’t affect the main teams lining up their sprinters. Wild's team tried to take control but Specialized-Lululemon were doing much of the work. In the end Wild was positioned well to sprint.

Comments

Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) was very happy with her win, "I am really happy with this second win,” said a very happy Kirsten. ”Today was quite tough with the heat but also because of the diverse route. The whole day the team protect me and I didn’t have to waste any energy. Then in the final they made sure that the race came back together and positioned me so I could finish it off.

“It gives me such confidence to win on a level of this race for a second time, and I feel strong and every pedal stroke is right. Because of the help of the girls I don’t have to waste energy so I can start the sprint fresh. Teamwork in this race really pays off and I hope I can keep up this good performance.
