Stage 5 -Bronzini wins again

Saint Fargeau - Pougues Les Eaux, 98.7 km

Race Writeup

Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) was the strongest at the end of the 98.7km stage. Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) finsihed second to ensure she still retained the overall leaders jersey.Pauline Ferrand Prevot (Rabo Women) was third.

The day started fast, with the USA team at the front and driving hard to create a break. They were not successful, but they did tire out some legs in the peloton, making the day hard with the later attacks. The ony significant break of the day was a solo breakaway midway through the stage, when former twice world champion, Giorgia Bronzini, rode away from the peloton. Bronzini became virtual leader herself for several kilometres. Orica-AIS controlled the chase however and ensured that it would again be a bunch sprint. Bronzini was just too powerful, coming from behind and using all of her sprinter 'savvy' to overtake along the barriers.

Comments

Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) was very happy with her 5th win, Its something amazing for me, said Bronzini. Some people say that I am old now that I am 30, but maybe Im now good at using my legs with my head. It was a little bit harder than the other days today, because I worked, and I was in the break. Today we started with the tactics to help Linda, to try to take the jersey, Bronzini explained, and in the middle of the race, with about 40km to go, we started to attack. When it was my time to attack they let me go! I was alone on the attack for 10 or 15km, and the gap was around a maximum of 50 seconds, but when I was alone I rode in my own rhythm, and not full gas. Alone I could do nothing, but I hoped that the other teams like Orica-AIS would lose power trying to catch me.
