Stage 1 - Specialized-lululemon win opening TTT

Colfontain - Honnelles, TTT 19.75km

Race Writeup

Team Specialized-lululemon won the opening stage of the Lotto-Belisol Belgium tour with a solid start, winning the win in the TTT event.Fresh from their win at the Sweden World Cup TTT, the current World Champions posted a time of 25.39. This was 35 seconds ahead of Orica-AIS and Tibco to the Top. Defending champion Ellen Van Dijk will wear the yellow leaders jersey going into stage two.

The 2013 tour has expanded to four stages from the three it hosted in 2012. With the Team Time Trial the opening event over a very technical stage. The next two stages lend themselves to fast and aggressive racing over fairly flat roads. The fourth stage features climbs and cobbles that will naturally string out the field and potentially reduce the bunch for the finish.

The whole course was technical with lots of road furniture and different road conditions at various points of the race. There were climbs, descents, cobbles, road furniture, twists and turns. The most technical bits came during the first 3km. From there, it was downhill to a sharp nearly 180° right-hand turn at the bottom.

Immediately after the turn, the road went back up for about 2.5km. It was quite open at the top on exposed, wide concrete roads. This section gave way to a drop off on a cobbled descent. From there, it was weaving left and right all the way to the finish, which was uphill for the last 700m or so.

Comments

Ellen Van Dijk (Specialized-lululemon) was happy, "It was quite a technical course," said Van Dijk, " and we didn't really get the chance to really learn it but everyone was in the same boat and it was another good opportunity for us to practice as a team together for World Championships. We have 35 seconds to try to save now and we'll have to be attentive of time bonuses but we're looking forward to trying to defends the jersey," added Van Dijk

Dave McPartland (Director Orica-AIS) was very happy with the team's performance, "Everyone was much, much happier today. Specialized-lululemon had seven riders to our six, and I think we could have closed the gap even more had we brought a seventh rider with us to the tour. Given that we essentially made up one minute over Specialized in a course that was about half the distance of the World Cup, the girls were super happy with their ride.

What it boils down to for me is this: Sweden was our first team time trial since April, and we hadn’t had a single camp between April and the Swedish World Cup, so we’re really learning how to race the team time trial again after four months without. In the space of one week, even though we’ve changed our roster – keeping Loes [Gunnewijk], Emma [Johansson] and Jessie [MacLean] and bringing in Nettie, Gu and Gracie [Elvin], we’ve seen major improvements. There was a positive vibe after the race today because we’re happy with the gains but also because we saw that there’s still room to grow. We can see places to improve, and with how easily we improved this week after making some fairly minor adjustments, we’re confident that we can get a lot more out of ourselves with more tweaks still to come," said McPartland
