Stage 4 -Shara Gillow wins tough individual time trial
Shara Gillow (Orica-AIS) won the tough stage 4 individual time trial in Gera. The course was technical in the opening few kilometres, then a gradual climb along the open dual carriage way, with a head wind, before a dead turn and fast tail wind downhill. Dutch time trial champion, Ellen van Dijk (Specialized Lululemon) was second 35 seconds behind Gillow. Third was the overall leader and Swedish time trial champion, Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS).
Temperatures were high again for the 4th stage in Gera. The course was technically very challenging for the riders. It started in the market square and climbed its' way out of Gera before heading out on the long dual carriageway. Ellen van Dijk started 42nd and quickly stamped her authority on the ride. She caught the rider 1 minute ahead of her and completed the course in 29 minutes 27 seconds. It looked like she would win the stage until Gillow, who had started 64th, finished the course in 28 minutes 52 seconds. Johansson, also caught her 1 minute rider, Annemiek van Vleuten (Rabo Women) who was only 11 seconds behind Johansson overall before the stage. Johansson finished only 4 seconds behind van Dijk.
With three stages left, Johansson holds a 5 second lead ahead of team mate Gillow and 47 seconds ahead of Tatiana Guderzo (McCipollini Giordana) who moved up from 6th to 3th overall, after the Italian time trial champion finished 4th in a time of 29 minutes 42 seconds. van vleuten (Rabo Women) dropped out of the top 10 after finishing 2 minutes 59 seconds behind Gillow.
