Stage 3 - van Vleuten wins stage 3

Schleiz, 120.5km

Race Writeup

Annamiek van Vleuten (Rabo Women) delivered a perfect win for her team at the end of a long and hot stage 2. Overnight leader Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) was second ahead of Valentina Scandolara (McCipollini Giordana).

With three mountain and three sprint classifications today, the attacks started  as soon as the peloton had completed the neautralised zone.First to attempt a break were, Joanne Rowsell (Wiggle Honda) and Tatiana Guderzo (McCipollini Giordana). Alena Amialiusik (Be Pink) tried to get join the group with two others  but it was over as quickly as it formed. When the race reach Bucha at 10.5km, there was another attack but the bunch were very attentive and the attack was not successful. The hilly stage allowed a solo escape from Austria’s national champion, Andrea Graus (Bigla), who broke away after 28 km and managed to open an initial gap of over 3 minutes 50 seconds. The peloton were relaxed at this point and confident that they could control any other attacks. Unfortunately they went off course and by the time they were rerouted the gap to Graus was out to over 7 minutes. With 50km to go the chase was on in earnest from the team of the overall leader Orica-AIS. Graus had to wait 45 seconds at a train crossing ,but the bunch were lucky, another train was due only 5 minutes behind the one that stopped Graus, they had reduced the time gap enough to avoid this delay.

The team moved to the from and stretched out the peloton. There were a number of riders who could not hold the pace and they fell back. Orica-AIS chased for 40km and with 10km to go they finally made contact with Graus. As soon as Graus was caught, a number of attacks started. The bunch was neutralising every try. A small group managed to get a gap with 4km to go, Amanda Spratt (Orica – AIS), Adrie Visser (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team), Roxane Knetemann (Rabo Women Cycling Team), Valentina Carretta (Mcipollini Giordana). Rabo Women closed the gap and immediately tried to set a high tempo in the cross winds. They forced the peloton to race in the gutter for a short while but a gap could not hold.

In the end the peloton was in tact with 1km to go. At the right had turn to the finish straight, Annamiek van Vleuten had a great line and managed to get a good line to the finish. She was a clear leader with Johansson and Scandolara fighting for second and third. Emma Johansson defends the Yellow Sparkasse Overall Leader’s and the White Herbacin Sprint Leader’s Jerseys, at 11 sec and 11 pts ahead of Annemiek van Vleuten.

Comments

Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) after the win, she said, “I really wanted this stage win, which was the priority today. Now, with my good overall position, Yellow is of course something to look at. However, even now, with this very tight top of the standings, I don’t think the Tour is going to be decided on bonifications alone. After tomorrow’s time trial, we’ll know a lot more.”
