Race Writeup

Elisa Longo Borghini (Hitec) won the final tough stage after 88km of undulating wet roads,in  heavy rain again. Evelyn Stevens (specialized Lululemon) was second ahead of the overnight leader Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS). With her third place, Johansson secured her third win of the tour and the overall title. Orica-AIS also won the team classification.

With three categorised climbs (one cat three and two cat two) the race stated at a steady pace for the first 5km. At the front of the peloton Orica-AIS stretched out peloton and marked the constant moves that were trying to go off the front. Annette  Edmondson and Loes Gunnewijk worked hard for Orica-AIS to keep an eye on the early action.

At the first intermediate sprint after 10km, Majerus (Lotto Belisol) was first ahead of Adrie Visser (Boels Dolmans) and Marianne Vos (Rabo Women).

Immediately the first attack.went, it was Jessica Kilhbom (Gramo Go Green) , she was allowed to get a small gap before the bunch started to react and reel her it after 18km.

As the peloton approached the first of the categorised climbs they were all together.

The pace was steady as the rain eased a little but conditions were still poor with difficult visibility. A small breakaway formed that included Johansson, Longo-Borghini, Stevens and team mate Ellen Van Dijk, Megan Guarnier (Rabo Women) and Anna Van de Breggen (Sengers Ladies)

A number of riders started to bridge across as the second intermediate sprint arrived, Van de Breggen was first ahead of Longo Borghini, and Johansson. As the lead group grew, Shara Gillow (Orica-AIs) joined her team mate, as a group of  13 formed with a gap of 1 minute 27 seconds. The group included; Johansson, Gillow, Carlee Taylor (Lotto Belisol Ladies), Longo Borghini, Christel Ferrier and Luperini (Faren-Lets Go Finland), Stevens and Van Dijk, Anouska. Koster (Team Futurumshop),Noemi Cantele and Alena Amialiusik (BePink), Guarnier lead and Van De Breggen.

The break worked well together as they approached 5km to the first of the three categorised climbs with 48km to go. Stevens set a fast tempo up the category three climb, causing break to split. Johansson went with her along with Longo Borgini and Van De Breggen. The first GPM went to Longo Borghini, with Stevens and Johansson following over the top.

A leading group of eight formed, Johansson, Gillow, Luperini, Stevens, Van Dijk, Amualiusik, Guarnier and Van De Breggen. Lucinda Brand (Rabo Women) and Ferrier bridged across to leaders with 45km to go.

At the second of the climbs, the cat 2 climb caused more damage on bunch. Stevens attacked and managed to gain a 10 second lead as the bunch splintered as they gave chase. Stevens stretched out her lead 20 seconds ahead of chase group of five riders. By the time they reached the top of the climb, Stevens was first over ahead of Longo Borghini, Johansson, Van de Breggen, Guarnier and Luperini.

On the decent the rain started to fall heavily again. A leading group of three formed Johansson, Longo Borghini and Stevens with 24km to go. The three leaders worked hard and managed to gain a 50 second lead ahead of main bunch with Luperini and Van De Breggen at 20 seconds. Luperini and Van de Breggen bridged the gap to Johansson, Stevens and Longo Borghini to formed a lead group of five.

On the final climb, Stevens attacked 500 metres over the top of the final GPM (cat 2) as conditions became wet and very windy on the descent as the leaders rode the technical run into finish.

At the top of the climb, Stevens, Johansson and Longo Borghini were together. Johansson and Longo Borghini managed to distance themselves from Stevens on the descent, creating a 60m advantage after 73km of racing. Stevens worked hard and made it back to Johansson and Longo Borgini. The trio had a 20 second lead over Van de Breggen and a group of 11 riders at 55 seconds to the race leaders. Van de Breggen managed to bridge across to the leaders.

Inside the final 10 km , the four leaders worked hard to maintain their advantage. With 5km to go the gap was 1 minute 48.

In the final 500m, Johansson was caught by an early kick from Longo-Borghin. Stevens gave chase but could not catch the young Italian.
