Kirsten Wild takes sprint victory in Gelderland

Apeldoorn, Netherlands 139 km

Race Writeup

Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) won her 8th victory of the season in the Ronde van Gelderland, sprinting to the win ahead of Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) and Chloe Hosking (Hitec Products).

Conditions delivered the first warm day of the 2013 season for the168 starters. The course provided a microcosm of Dutch racing - narrow, dijk-lined roads and short tough climbs.  The large bunch and some smaller suburban roads caused some issues for the large peloton in the opening part of the race. A small crash in the middle of the bunch caused some delays for riders as they were forced to chase back. But already, at the front, the pace was on. Lauren Hall (USA) attacked but she was only allowed to gain a small 150 meter advantage. After 11 km of racing, Hall was back in the bunch but the damage was done. The bunch was split into two parts.

As the bunch reached the Kemperberg after 22 km of racing, the speed was high at the front of the bunch, climbers attacked, trying to break the race into groups. A number of riders dropped as the leaders kept the pressure on up the climb. It worked, a leading group of 30 riders formed with the remaining peloton split into several groups. The gap between the groups hovered around 20 seconds. The back groups were fighting hard to stay in touch with the leaders but gradually the gaps increased. After 50km of racing the leading group of approximately 60 riders were holding a gap of 1 minute 20 seconds a second group, who were being chased by another group 25 seconds back and the final group was 3 minutes back from the leaders.

After 67 km the road narrowed on to the climbs. The speed at the front of the bunch increased as riders tried to escape. As the parcours went upwards, a group of 5 riders managed to gain a small gap. The group included Junior World Champion, Lucy Garner and Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) and Shara Gillow and Emma Johansson (Orica - AIS). On the main climb it was Johansson and Wild who had managed to gain a small gap but the group were back together on the decent.

A more relaxed section followed, riders took on food and drink during the transitional roads northwards from climbs to dijks. With 81 km of racing completed, a lone rider attacked, Shara Gillow. She quickly gained a 15 second lead that eventually went out to 1 minute 40 seconds. With 35km left, the chase was on to close the gap to Gillow. The speed was extremely high in the bunch. Gradually Orica - AIS's ability to keep a presence on the front of the bunch whilst Gillow was away, was eventually undermined by the teams of the sprinters, Argos-Shimano, Wiggle Honda, Specialized Lululemon and Rabobank. The chase was on to the solo escapee. Gillow's (Orica - AIS) whose advantage hovered around 30 seconds with about 20 km to go.

It seemed like the peloton were just waiting for the right move to finally close in on Gillow. With 10km to go, Dutch Champion, Annemiek Van Vleuten (Rabo Women) put in an effort. As Gillow's gap fell, van Vleuten caught the Australian. The pair worked together but with 4km to go on, the outskirts of Apeldoorn, the breakaway was done and both riders were back in the bunch which was setting up the bunch sprint. Argos Shimano set up Wild perfectly and again she was too strong for the others. Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) and Hosking (Hitec Products) was no match for the powerful Dutch woman.

Comments

Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) won her 8th victory of the season, "It was a very tough race," said Wild. "In the end, we were forced to take control and the whole team, especially Willeke Knol and Amy Pieters, made sure the break was caught and we could prepare ourselves for the sprint. I am really satisfied about our performance today."

Simon Cope (Wiggle Honda -Sport Director) was pleased with his team's performance, although Bronzini was not quick enough to pull off the win. "The team put Giorgia into the best position possible in that last couple of kilometres," Cope said. "The last kilometre had three turns in it, so it was technical. "Everyone did their job and delivered Giorgia onto Kirsten's wheel," he added. "I think she actually got by her, but I think Wild looked at her and went again; which is what Mark Cavendish does to people, so what more can you do."
