Drentse 8 Dwingeloo - Vos wins bunch sprint Dwingeloo, 141.2km
Marianne Vos (Rabobank Liv/giant) started her 2013 road season, as she finished 2012. Vos, looked after herself to complete the 141.2km course and sprint to the line ahead of Wiggle Honda's Giorgia Bronzini and Orica-AIS's Emma Johnasson. Conditions
were difficult right from the start. It was cold, wet and the narrow,
traffic riddle circuit was difficult for the 180 rider bunch. After 5km,
the first crash of the day was quickly recovered by the riders. It did
split the bunch into three however. A controlled peloton, led by Tibco,
specialized Lululemon and Orica-AIS meant the bunch stayed together
through the first 60km. It was then that the major crash of the day occurred.
The casualties of the day, were;
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg
(Specialized-lululemon) who was taken to hospital with severe facial
injuries and will not take part in racing for the rest of the weekend.
Chantal Blaak (Tibco) had a suspected broken collarbone, Valentina
Scandolara (MCipollini-Giordana) was and a Faren rider were also caught up
in the slippery conditions. Maaike Polspoel (Sengers Ladies) and Ilona Hoeksma (Parkhotel) hit the front of the race and managed to gain a minute advantage. Lauren Kitchen (Wiggle Honda) gave chase to the leaders and helped them to stay clear, but never gained more than 45 seconds. with 29km to go, the teams of Specialized Lululemon, Rabobank Liv/Giant, Orica-AIS moved to the front to close the gap to the leaders. With 20km to go the race was all togther. Vos took control of the bunch led them home from 50m to go.
