Kimberley Wells (Specialized Securitor) dominated the final sprint to give her an overwhelming lead and overall honours in the Santos Women's Cup. Nicole Whitburn (Liz/Giant) and Jenny MacPherson (Liv/Giant) crossed the line second and third which moved them up to second and third overall respectively. With temperatures sitting around 28 degrees, the women powered round the 1000m circuit, attacking right from the gun. It was the team of Crino Cycles-Casa-Bottega who again opened up the action. Former International, who retired from racing overseas at the end of last season, Emma Mackie, put the pressure on the front. Whitburn was the first to react to close the gap. Lauretta Hanson (BCS Specialized skoda) tried to get away but she was closely marked by Mackie. The pace was high and Amy Bradley (Specialized Securitor) who has looked after Wells since the start of her winning streak on 1st January, attacked. Jasmin Hurikino (Crino Cycles-Casa-Bottega) went with her. The pair had a small lead before Amy Cure (Jayco AIS) moved to the front to close the gap. Again and again, the Crino Cycles-Casa-Bottega women attacked until eventually Hurikino managed to get a gap. She was chased by Whitburn and the pair worked hard to form a break. The managed to gain a maximum of 18 seconds lead on the disorganised bunch, which at times was able to bring the gap down, only to see it increase again when Sarah Roy and Carla Ryan (Crino Cycles-Casa-Bottega) moved to the front to slow the pace. In the end it took Joanne Hogan (Jayco VIS) to bring the gap to 9 seconds. It was not enough though, it took Cure to move to the front and bring the two leaders back. She used her pursuiting skills to bring the race back together with 5 laps remaining. Ryan and Hogan tried to break things up with 3 to go but it was Bradley again who closed the gap. In the end it was a bunch kick. No one could match Wells and she crossed the line two bike lengths ahead of Whitburn and MacPherson.
Comment Kimberley Wells (Specialized Securitor) was all smiles at the end of race three. With two wins and the overall series under her belt, the sprinter was very happy, "I am stoked to get another win for the specialized Securitor team and take the Santos Women's series. The team did a great job out there tonight and I could not have done it without them," said Wells. Amy Bradley has been instrumental in helping Wells since the first day of the year, "Amy Bradley is in fine form. She is a great team mate to have with me. I call her my lieutenant and sometimes I also call her my shadow because she is always there for me," added Wells.
