Day 1 Qualifying

Race Writeup

Germany set new world record to put them in a perfect position for the gold medal ride off against Australia. The British pair of Vicki Pendleton and Jess Varnish struggled in qualifying and only managed 4th fastest. 

With a near capacity crowd and warm temperatures it was a near certainty that there would be a world record broken in Melbourne. Starting in the sixth pairing the German duo, Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogels set a blistering speed 32.630 seconds to break the world record set by the British pair in London by .124 seconds. No one could match their speed. The Australian pair, Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch were quick, riding 32.752 seconds. They beat the British time from London and Meares was definitely the quickest on the track but McCulloch was off pace only riding 6th quickest for the second lap.
