Trofeo Binda 2012 - Vos solo victory

Cittiglio, Italy 131.2km

Race Writeup

Marianne Vos (Rabobank Women) soloed to victory on a warm, sunny afternoon in Cittiglio.

As may be expected on the tough course, which includes several tough climbs, the bunch stayed together for most of the first fifty, flat kilometres. It was not until Loes Gunnewijk (GreenEDGE-AIS) broke away, that an attack really 'stuck'. Gunnewijk led the race for 40 kilometres, gaining a maximum advantage of 1 minute forty seconds before being caught at the end of the second lap of the 19 kilometre circuit which was covered four times at the end of the race.

A group of eleven riders then broke away and hovered just off the front of the bunch, which by now was becoming smaller and smaller. Riders were unable to keep with the pace and slipped off the back. Judith Arndt (GreenEDGE-AIS) attacked, but was caught, then Marianne Vos tried, but each attack was neutralised.

The World Cup leader finally secured the win after breaking free on the final climb. Evelyn Stevens (Specialized-lululemon) was with her, but crashed on the penultimate hairpin before the top. It looked like the American clipped her pedal on the road, her rear wheel slipped from beneath her and she went down. She joined the race again, to finish just behind the main group.

Despite losing Stevens, the escape was not easy for Vos though, despite a huge acceleration, she gained only five seconds and it stayed that way for four or five kilometres of the final run-in back to Cittiglio. Finally, in the closing two kilometres, the chasers cracked, Trixi Worrack (Specialized-Lululemon) and Tatiana Guderzo (MCipollini Giambenini) went after Vos, whilst the bunch was left chasing behind.

Vos was far enough ahead to enjoy the 500 metres of the finishing straight alone. She checked over her shoulder and then gave a long, delighted victory salute. Tatiana Guderzo sprinted to second place, then Trixi Worrack just held off the closing bunch to take third place.

Marianne Vos takes maximum points from the first two rounds and wear the leader's jersey in the third round of the World Cup. The third race of the series takes place in Belgium next Sunday in the Rond van Vlaanderen.

Comments

Marianne Vos (Stiching Rabo) has won in Cittiglio before, but she said "Its always great (to win), but its even more special to win it solo," she continued "for me it was beautiful, I had time to put my hands in the air and time to celebrate".

Jeroeme Blijlevens (Manager Stiching SRabo) was very happy as always; "Last week we won in Drenthe, I've done that race three times and we've won three times and this as my first time here," (Vos has previously ridden Trofeo Binda as part of the Dutch National team) "its special to win here with Marianne."

Tatiana Guderzo (MCipolinni) was happy with second place: “I didn’t really feel good, then kilometre after kilometre, I found the strength to keep going and end up being a protagonist at the finish line”
