Track Day 5
- Trott, sits first in Omnium, Pendleton, Meares, Guo, Vogel in sprint
finals
London
2012, Velodrome
Race
Writeup
Omnium
Great Britain's
Laura Trott is one of the favourites for the women's omnium which made its
Olympic debut at the London Velodrome. Trott did not disappoint the home
crowd either, winning two of the first three events. Trott shares top spot
with Sarah Hammer (USA). The pair have a commanding lead 5 points ahead of
Annette Edmonson (AUS) and six points ahead of Canadian Tara Whitten.
Comprising six
events over two days of racing, the Omnium blends a mix of endurance and
sprint events.
Sometimes
described as the decathlon of cycling, points are awarded based on an
athlete's position in each race: one point for finishing first, two points
for second and so on. At the end of the event the points are tallied and the
athlete with the fewest points wins the gold.
