Stage 9 - Johansson wins final sprint, Vos wins Maglia Rosa Sarnico (BG) - Bergamo 108 km
Emma Johansson (Hitec) won the final stage of the 2012 Giro Donne, ahead of Marianne Vos (Rabo Women) and Emma Pooley (AA Drink). The final stage of the Giro Donne 2012 opened with an attack after 22km of racing. A leading group of 18 riders formed a group at the front of the race and quickly gained a 1 minute 5 second advantage. In the group were;Liesbet de Vocht (Rabo Women), Valentina Carretta, Simona Frapporti (Be Pink), Monia Baccaille and Marta Tagliaferro (MCipollini), Martina Ruzickova (S.C. Michela Fanini Rox), Jade Borgato (Diadora - Pasta Zara), Ludivine Henrion (Lotto Belisol Ladies) and Valentina Bastianelli (Vaiano Tepso). A number of riders gradually bridged to the leaders before the main climb of the day at Bianzano. The category 2 climb split the chasing bunch. With 53km to go the leading group included 37 riders although it was not long before this split. A leading group of 17 drove the front of the peloton and gained a 30 second lead ahead of the chasers. At the second climb of the day San Roco. A small group of 12 formed at the front which included the Maglia Rosa, Emma Pooley (AA Drink), Evelyn Stevens (Specialized Lululemon) and Emma Johansson (Hitec). Over the top of climb first was Vos, closely followed by Pooley and Johansson. The three quickly gained an advantage of 1 minute 55 seconds ahead of 10 pursuers. The speed of the three leaders increased and they quickly increased their lead to 2 minutes 23 seconds. With 87km of racing completed, the three leaders were holding a 2 minute 50 second lead. As the leader approach the final climb of the day, the cat 2, Colle dei Pasta, they held a 2 minute 52 second lead. Back in the chase, Judith Arndt (Orica-AIS) decided to give chase to the leaders. Over the top of the climb, Pooley was first ahead of Vos and Johansson. The leaders descended fast. As they approached the 10km to go they were holding a comfortable lead. On the outskirts of Bergamo, the three leaders powered to the line. In the end the sprint was won by Emma Johansson ahead of Marianne Vos and Emma Pooley. Vos secured her second victory in the Giro Donne. Vos also secured the points jersey. Emma Pooley (AA Drink) won the Mountain classification. Elisa Longo Borghini (Hitec - Mistral Home) won the Young rider classification.
