With 4 stages completed, Stage 5 was a welcome flat, albeit hot stage for the 118 starters. Targeted as one for the sprinters, a lone attack from Tiffany Cromwell (Orica-AIS), who started 12 minutes 29 seconds back on the overall leader Marianne Vos (Rabo Women) was allowed to go.

Finally the peloton started to work, Rabo Women moved to the front and the gap dropped to 12 minutes, putting the Maglia Rosa jersey firmly back on the shoulders of Marianne Vos.

With 20km to go the gap from Cromwell back the to main peloton was hovering around the 12 minute mark. At 10km to go, Cromwell was still holding on to a 11 minute 30 second lead.

When Cromwell reached 5km to go her lead was down to 11 minutes. The young Australian kept focus and driving for the line to secure an important victory. With 2km to go the bunch were at 9 minutes.
