Stage 2 - Vos makes it two from two

Roma - Roma 7.2 km individual time trial

Race Writeup

Marianne Vos (Rabo Women) completed a dream stage 2 ride over the 7.2 km course to cement her position in the overall Maglia Rosa. Clara Hughes (Specialised Lululemon) was second ahead of Judith Arndt (Orica-AIS).

After the fast and furious finish on stage 1, the race moved north to the historic city of Rome. The individual time trial was raced over a 7.2km technical course that included a passage of the famous Colosseum and the major streets in the centre of Rome.

Liesbet de Vocht (Rabo Women) set the early pace with a time of 9 minutes 40.55 seconds. This time however did not stand for long. Silvia Valsecchi (Be Pink) finished the 7.2 km course in 9 minutes 24.11 seconds.

When Emma pooley (AA Drink) the 2010 World Time trial champion finished the leading time was down to 9 minutes 12.38 seconds. Pooley did not stay in the lead for long, Olga Zabelinskaya (RusVelo) finished in the fastest time, knocking 3 seconds off Pooley's time. Zabelinskaya completed the course in 9 minutes 9.84 seconds.

Evelyn Stevens (Specialised Lululemon) who is part of the USA contingent preparing for the London olympics, moved into first place in a time of   9 minutes  7 seconds.

Canadian time Trial champion Clara Hughes (Specialised Lululemon) was the first rider to go under 9 minutes. Hughes complete the course in 8 minutes 55.02.

The current World Time Trial champion Judith Arndt (Orica-AIS) was next to finish. Arndt could only manage 9 minutes 2.26 seconds.

Vos was leading overnight and was last to start. Benefiting from knowing the earlier times, Vos rode a perfect race and secured herself a second stage win in a time of 8 minutes 50 seconds and another day in Rosa.
