Stage 1 -Vos wins bunch sprint Napoli
- Terracina (LT) 139 km
Marianne Vos (Rabo Women) made a dominating return to international racing, with a win from the bunch sprint into Terracina in the opeing stage of the 23rd Giro d'Italia Femminile International. American, Shelly Olds (AA Drink) was second, ahead of 2011 World Road Champion, Giorgia Bronzini (Diadora - Pasta Zara) Conditions we warm at the start of the first stage from Napoli to Terracina. After 32 km of racing the first and main attack of the day went. Alina Bondarenko (Rusvelo) and Aleksanra Sosenko (Vaiano). The two leaders quickly gained momentum. They were chased by two riders, Valentina Bastianelli (Vaiano). and Valentina Scandolara (Michaela Fanini). The four leaders worked well together and gradually increased their lead to 7 minutes after 56km of racing. With a lack of organisation from the main peloton, the gap went out to 8 minute 14 seconds after 63km. The call from the sprinters team went out in the peloton and the major teams moved to the from to bring down the gap. Specialised Lululemon, Rabo Women, AA Drink and Diadora Pasta Zara. Within 7km the gap was down to 6 minutes 30 seconds. After 100km the gap was coming down quickly. With 30 km to go the leading four riders were starting to realise that their time on the front was almost up. Sosenko decided to try to go it alone and managed to gain a 36 second gap on the her breakaway group. With only one cat 3 climb at 117km, Sosenko tried to increase her lead. Her gap was 1 minute 15 second to the three chasers. The main peloton was however, closing fast. With 25km to go there was one lone leader with 1 minute 48 seconds on the closing peloton. McCipollini moved to the front to help with the chase. With 14km to go the escape was done and the predicted bunch sprint was being prepared. The teams jostled for position to line up for their sprinters. Vos found the best line and crossed first ahead of Olds and Bronzini. Ina Yoko Teutenberg (Specialised Lululemon) was fourth ahead of newly crowned German road champion Judith Arndt (Orica-AIS) Stage 2 is an Individual time trial round the historic city of Rome.
