Stage 4 - Van Vleuten wins final stage, Arndt wins overall
Orduna -Iurreta 116km Annemiek van Vleuten (Rabo Women) outsprinted the leading group to win the final stage of Bira. Emma Johansson (Hitec) was third ahead of Trixi Worrack (Specialized-lululemon. Judith Arndt (Orica -AIS GreenEDGE) was awarded the overall title despite a crash in the last 3km. Arndt, who was 1 second behind Pooley after stage 3. She was given the same time as Van Vleuten which denied Johansson the overall win.. Amanda Spratt (Orica AIS GreenEDGE) contributed to a number of the breaks of the day and was awarded the most combative. Spratt initiated the first attack after 25km of racing. Shelley Olds (AA Drink) and Ellen van Dijk (Spezialized Lululemon) joined Spratt but the group were unable to create a major gap. Spratt attacked again at 39km and was joined by compatriot Carlee Taylor (Aus). The pair pulled away and gained an advantage of 2 minutes 40 seconds. As the leaders approached the 2 category climb at Zumeltza at 56.4km, the gap back to the bunch was closed to 1 minute 40 seconds. . The rain started to fall and it caused the bunch to split on the decent of Zumeltza. With three groups on the road, the overall lead sat with the first two groups. Overnight leader Emma Pooley (AA Drink) lagged behind on the decent and lost nearly 40 seconds but the two chasing groups managed to regroup to put Pooley back in contention. Ellen van Dijk (Specialized-lululemon), bridged to the two leaders and climbed the category 3 Urkiola together. The chase group were working hard to close the gap. By the time the leaders reached 20km to go, the gap was down to 20 seconds. At the foot of last climb of Duna, the chase was done. Arndt led the bunch over the top and a leading group of 16 riders formed. The leaders quickly formed a gap and with 5km to go the gap was out to just over 1 minute. The group included all of the key teams and potential overall winners. The pace was extremely high and with 4km to go the leading group was down to 7 riders. Johansson (Hitec), van Vleuten (Rabo Women), Worrack (Specialized-lululemon), Sharon Laws (AA Drink), Arndt (Orica-AIS), Alena Amialiusik (Be Pink) and Anna Sanchis (Bizkaia-Durango). Sanchis was the first to crack, then, just after the 3km to go Amialiusik and Arndt crashed. Van Vleuten took victory in the sprint and for a while Johansson thought that she had taken the overall but the race ruling gave Arndt the win.
