Stage 3 - Villumsen victory for Orica -AIS Greenedge

Orduna, 13.4km, individual time trial

Race Writeup

Linda Villumsen (Orica-AIS Greenedge) went one better that the 2011 World Championships to win her first time trial win of the season. After a long recovery from illness over the off season, Villumsen seems to be finally finding some good form.

Villumsen posted a time of 18 minutes 21 seconds over the 13.4 kilometer course. Villumsen finished 3 seconds faster than teammate and World Time Trial Champion Judith Ardnt. Ellen Van Dijk (Specialized Lululemon) rounded out the top 3. 2010 World Time Trial champion and overnight leader Emma Pooley (AA Drink) finished 4th 10 seconds behind Villumsen.

Villumsen’s win gave GreenEDGE-AIS their sought-after stage win, and Arndt’s result leaves the team well-poised on the overall ahead of tomorrow’s final stage.

Comments

Linda Villumsen (Orica-AIS Greenedge) was extremely happy with her first ITT win of the year, “It’s difficult to make a plan for a time trial,” said Villumsen, when asked how she moderated her efforts on the undulating course. “You just go as fast as you can. I don’t think about how other people will ride the course. It makes no difference. It only matters how I ride. I go as fast I can from start to finish.”

Emma Pooley (AA Drink) continues to lead the race. The Briton is one second ahead of Arndt on the general classification. “We’ll have a team meeting tonight and make our plan,” said Villumsen. “We’ll come up with something good, I’m sure. We are in a position to challenge for the overall now, and that has always been our goal.”

Judith Arndt (Orica-AIS Greenedge) has many goals this year but she has her eyes firmly on London, every time trial is an opportunity to hone her skills,  “In a time trial, you focus only on yourself,” Arndt agreed. “You keep pressure and focus the entire time, and you ride as fast as you can. It’s about constantly putting pressure on the pedals. For instance, if there’s a climb, I keep going as hard after the climb as I went on the climb. I don’t get to the top and think ‘Oh thank God. I’m on the top and now I can rest.’ There is no rest. That’s the key.”

Dave McPartland (Orica-AIS Greenedge Sports Director)  was confident that his team would shine on the time trial course. “This course was a bit tricky,” said McPartland. “There was a small climb after about two kilometers. Then, it went up and down until six kilometers to go. The main climb came at this point. It was a short but hard climb on narrow, rough roads. After that climb, it was downhill for the last four kilometers. It made for a fast, flat finish.”
