At the first sprint at 12 km, which was won by Valentina Scandolara (Michela Fanini), it provided an opportunity for Linda Villumsen (Orica -AIS) to attack. She rode along for 25km before the key teams of Hitec, Rabo Women, AA Drink, Australian and German National Team moved to the front to close the gap before the second time up the Milloi climb. It was the second sprint at 44 km that broke up the bunch. They were joined fifty kilometers by eleven other riders led by French champion Christel Ferrier Bruneau (Hitec Mistral) and the Basque Eneritz Iturriaga Echevarria (Lointek), to form a lead group if thirty one leaders. When the leading group started the larger loop of Lekoitz, the leader had generated a 1 minute 30 second lead over the rest of the chasers. Ellen Van Dijk (Specialized Lululemon), Armitstead and Lucinda Brand (AA Drink), Spratt (Orica AIS), Australian Jo Hogan (Bizkaia Durango) and Mascha Pijnenborg (Dolmans Boels ) moved to the front. As the leader reached the top of the climb of Lekoitz, Pooley attacked. Spratt went with her followed by Brand and team mate Armitstead. The leading group split on the decent and a leading group of 13 riders formed. Pooley, Lucinda Brand, Sharon Laws and Lizzie Amitstead (AA Drink), Annemiek Van Vleuten (Rabo Women), Trixi Worrack (Specialized lululemon), Emma Johansson (Hitec), Alena Amialiusik (Be Pink), Spratt, Claudia Hausler, Judith Arndt (Orica -AIS Greenedge), Anna Sanchis ( Bizkaia-Durango) and Pijnenborg (Dolmans-Boels). Pooley broke away from Brand and Spratt on the decent and eventually the pair were caught by the chasing 9 riders behind them. Pooley rode solo
to the finish and into the overall lead. Overnight leader, Teutenberg fell
