Stage 3

Crouch - Idaho City, 93km

Race Writeup

The Queen stage saw 8 riders attack on the first climb to form a strong break. It looked like the break would stay away until the teams, who had missed the break, did the calculations and decided to chase. The break was caught on the final climb.

A leading group of 35-40 riders contested the sprint which was won convincingly by Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Specialized-lululemon). Teutenberg's team-mate, Amber Neben, the race leader, finished safely in the bunch and remains in the leader's jersey for the final stage. The team holds the top four positions on GC (Neben, Teutenberg, Stevens, Hughes), Shara Gillow is fifth, at 26 seconds.

"It was a hard day for me," said Teutenberg, referring to the 4500 feet of climbing they tackled during the stage. "I was suffering for 80% of the day.

"Leah also made the sprint really hard. It was a drag race for a while so I was happy to get around her and win the stage."

The break of eight riders did not worry the team's plans - "We had Trixi in that break," said Team director Ronny Lauke, "so we were happy with the situation but a couple of good teams in the field missed the break so eventually it was reeled in and the race descended quickly into the town of Idaho City for a 35 person sprint."
