Stage 2
Kuna,
Idaho, 17km
Race
Writeup
Amber Neben
led a Specialized-lululemon 'clean sweep' of the podium in the time trial
stage held in Kuna. Fastest over the 17 kilometre course, the American
made a claim towards a place in the USA olympic team for the time trial.
This, ironically, on a course in the race which sponsors Exergy will have
hoped would help seal their team captain's place in that very team;
Kristin Armstrong crashed in the prologue stage in Boise and had to drop
out of the Tour to have surgery on her broken left collarbone.
Neben's
team-mates, Evelyn Stevens and Clara Hughes were second and third
respectively. Fourth was the Australian and Oceania time trial champion,
Shara Gillow and fifth, the rider leading the young rider category, track
(team pursuit) bronze medallist, Gillian Carleton (Canada National Team).
Thanks to her
performance, Neben moved into the lead on General Classification, 11
seconds ahead of Stevens and 14 seconds ahead of Hughes. Fourth
place, too, is held by a Specialized-lululemon rider, overnight race
leader, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg.
"It
was a great day for us," said Team Director Ronny Lauke.
"The girls were super focused on doing well today and they
pulled off a great result.
"Now
we're in a good position but we still have two hard days to go so we have
to remain focused and try to defend our jersey."
"It's
a great feeling to be on this team with so many great riders and to sweep
the podium is nice," said Neben. "It was really
cold out there today, we were all freezing on the course but the good
thing about that is that it encourages you to ride faster."
