Stage 1 Chongming Industrial Zone, Chongbei, 74km
Melissa Hoskins (Orica-AIS presented by GreenEDGE) won the first stage ahead of Rochelle Gilmore (Faren) and Monia Baccaille (MCipollini). A crash in the finishing straight affected a number of riders, but occurred behind the leaders. With only 74km to cover on the flat, first, stage it was always likely that the race would come down to a mass sprint from a largely intact peloton. Sure enough, there were no major incidents to cause problems for riders. The weather was cooler than in previous years, at 18'C and dry, with a breeze. Thus, with dry road conditions on the already very good road surfaces on Chongming Island, there was little which could adversely affect the peloton and cause splits in it. The two intermediate sprints were without incident. Although the race sped up in the 3 or 4 kilometres leading into those competition markers, the peloton settled again afterwards. In the closing kilometres, the teams with significant interests in the finale made their way to the front. Orica-AIS presented by GreenEDGE, Hitec Products Mistral Home, Rabobank Women, Faren and MCipollini all moved forwards, ready to lead out their respective sprinters. Although there was a 90 degree left hand turn in the last kilometre, the road was wide enough that it was safely negotiated by the leaders. The road then led over a bridge and into the main finish area. It was at this point that the crash occurred. A Taiwan national team member and Sarah Duester (Rabo Women) were the first affected, Duester hit the ground after a spectacular cartwheel and then the "domino effect" began to spread across the width of the bunch. The leaders were already ahead of the incident when it occurred and continued their sprint. Melissa Hoskins (Orica-AIS) was ahead throughout, Rochelle Gilmore (Faren), too, was clear and then battling out for third were Monia Baccaille (MCipollini) and Charlotte Becker (Specialized-lululemon). The Italian eventually had the longer top-end speed and took third.
