Stage 2 - Nicolas Frantz Mamer, 99.1km
Valentina Scandolara (Italy) was the rider on the solo break today. She escaped and gained a reasonable gap, of up to 40 seconds, on the bunch. Then, though, Veronique Labonte (Canada) chased Scandolara and only succeeded in towing the bunch back to the Italian. There were no other significant attacks during the stage, although many riders tried. Shara Gillow (GreenEDGE-AIS) was active and was marked by van Vleuten when she attacked. Amber Neben (Specialized-lululemeon) also tried to get away, her move was marked by Vos. The race leader was quite active in the second part of the race in chasing attacks and monitoring the front of the bunch. Nothing, though looked dangerous in terms of succeeding and Vos looked comfortable in her chases. The group was together for the final sprint, a series of turns through Mamer had been negotiated five times previously, but in-race conditions are always different to the finale. In the turns, which run slightly downhill, there was a crash, behind the leading pair, Marianne Vos and Annemieke van Vleuten (Rabo Women). Giorgia Bronzini (Diadora Pasta Zara) was immediately identified on 'Radio Tour' as a victim who had been injured. Vos and van Vleuten had a relatively luxurious sprint; they maintained their gap over the chasers, but were relaxed on the final run-in. After the pair had glanced at each other and committed to their plan, Vos celebrated her general classification whilst van Vleuten took the stage and with it, enough bonus seconds to take second place overall. Belgian champion, Evelyn Arys (Kleo) was third on the stage and Adrie Visser (Skil-Argos) was third overall. Ashleigh Moolman (Lotto) secured the mountains jersey she had worn all day and van Vleuten won the sprinter jersey. Best Luxembourg rider was Christine Majerus (GSD Gestion). Riders crossed the line in small groups after picking themselves from the crash, everyone in the group was awarded the same time, under standard regulations. Giorgia Bronzini was one of the most seriously injured. She crossed the line, supported and assisted by her Diadora Pasta Zara team-mates. The Italian World Champion was obviously in pain and was immediately attended to by the race medical staff. She then went to hospital for x-rays on a suspected broken collarbone. Shelley Olds (AA Drink), who was racing with her previously broken wrist (from her crash in Trofeo Binda) was also taken to hospital. She crashed during the race. Her injuries and the outcome are not available at the time of writing. Click here for an update about Giorgia Bronzini's injury
