Omloop van Borsele - van Dijk wins ITT and road race

Borsele, Netherlands, 130km

Race Writeup

Ellen van Dijk (Specialised Lululemon) was in great form again to win the 130km Omloop van Borsele.van Dijk outsprinted the young Australian Gracie Elvin and Sarah Duester (Rabo Women) to make it a double for her and the team.

van Dijk was in the winning break of the day and proved too strong for the others in the final 500m. In the group with van Dijk were, Chantal Blaak (AA Drink), Iris Slappendel and Sarah Duester (Rabo Women), Amy Pieters (Skil), Megan Guarner (USA), Gracie Elvin (Australia) and Melissa Hoskins (Greenedge). The break went really early in the day after only 15km with Van Dijk and six others.

ITT

Ellen Van Dijk (Specialised Lululemon) was in great form in the Individual Time Trial that ran the day before the main event the Omloop van Borsele. Trafitionally this event was not open to the elite women but this year it was.

Specialised Lululemon did not have it all their own way. Linda Villumsen (Greenedge) finished second ahead of Specialised Lululemon's Clara Hughes and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg who placed 3rd and 4th respectively. Van Dijk took a minute out of her minute-woman Marianne Vos for a spectacular victory.

Road Race

Ellen van Dijk (Specialised Luluemon) said, "I'm just in a winning mood I think," smiled Van Dijk after the race.

"It's nice. Except for the rain and the cold. It's really freezing here. At the beginning I was just happy I was in the break so I could warm up a bit. I think my teammates in the bunch were freezing all day. At 80k we almost got caught," Ellen explained. "

"We had Iris [Slappendel] from Rabobank in the break with us but I think she punctured so Rabobank started chasing and the gap came down to about 40 seconds. But then Sarah Duester bridged to the break so they were happy again and the gap opened up to about a minute. At the end there were a lot of attacks. People were looking at me a lot so I had to be pretty active but in the end it was a sprint and that went well." 

Ronny Lauke (Team Director Specialised Lululemon) "Ellen just looks really strong right now," says Lauke. "She was out there all day and at the end she was both attacking and covering attacks. I started to get a bit worried that she was doing too much but she was able to pull it off. A great couple of days for her"

ITT

Ellen van Dijk (Specialised Luluemon) was very happy with her form, "It's really nice to win here," said Van Dijk. "I've been working hard on my TT and I'm happy that things are going so well in an Olympic year. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's race here now and then we have a race in Roeselare on Sunday." 

Clara Hughes (Specialised Lululemon) is in great form at the moment, "I'm frozen," said Hughes after the race. "It was torrential rain out there. We all started in an absolute downpour but it was a good result. I had a good ride and Ellen had a super ride.  It's been really exciting these past couple of weeks to race together and win together." 

Ronny Lauke (Team Director Specialised Lululemon) was very happy with the team,  "I'm really happy with the girls," said Lauke. "They're putting everything into their racing and it's paying off.  "Coming of the victory at Energiewacht and then Fleche Wallone on the weekend, they're full of motivation and it's really nice to see Ellen get this victory. She really deserves it.

"We spent quite a bit of time in the last weeks with the new SHIV TT bikes, getting the positions all dialed in for the new girls and fine-tuning the positions of the returning riders. Ellen's has taken a huge step up from last season and the results are showing."
