Gunnewijk continues GreenEDGE-AIS winning streak Gent, Belgium 119.4km
Loes Gunnewijk has continued the winning streak of one of the newest teams in the peloton, GreenEDGE - AIS. The Dutchwoman outsprinted compatriot, Ellen van Dijk (Specialized-lululemon) in a two-up finale on a cold, but sunny afternoon. After a quiet first half of the race, a small group formed, containing the eventual winner. This group stayed together for another 20 kilometres, before some moves were made with the intention of splitting the group further, or of soloing to victory. The significant move came when Gunnewijk broke away, alone, with around 30 kilometres left to race, on the Paddestraat. She was joined a handful of kilometres later by van Dijk. The pair worked together in to the finish, where Gunnewijk outsprinted van Dijk for the line. Trixi Worrack (Specialized-lululemon) won the bunch sprint and rounded-out the podium. There were only 36 finishers in this edition of the European season-opener. GreenEDGE-AIS have now won the Jayco Bay Series, Australian National Championships, Santos women's Cup, Ladies Tour of Qatar and Het Nieuwsblad - every race they have entered. Although the clean sweep may soon end, in the NZCT Tour in New Zealand, American Evelyn Stevens, riding for the USA National Team, is in the leader's jersey with one stage remaining. Shara Gillow (GreenEDGE) is second, five seconds behind Stevens.
