Carmen Small takes surprise win in Italy American uses head and legs to ensure victory Padova, Italy, 115 km
Carmen Small (USA) surprised some big names to take her first big European victory. The American used her speed and guile to win solo ahead of Simona Frapporti (BePink) and Monia Baccaille (MCipollini). Although there were some spirited attempts to breakaway in the first seven of nine laps, the bunch stayed together on the relatively flat circuit. The penultimate lap was where the major action occurred, a break was created, initiated Judith Arndt (GreenEDGE-AIS) and followed by Monia Baccaille and Malgorzata Jasinska (MCipollini), Emma Johansson (Hitec Mistral), Trixi Worrack (Specialized-lululemon), Alexandra Burchenkova (Michela Fanini Record Rox), Simona Frapporti (Be Pink), Evelyn Aris (Kleo Ladies Team), Carmen Small (USA National) and Inga Cilvinaite (Diadora Pasta Zara). The break quickly built up a 30 seconds gap over the bunch. Working for World Champion, Giorgia Bronzini, the Diadora Pasta Zara team reduced the gap significantly in the closing lap. But as the bunch was about to join the leaders, Small sensed the danger and counterattacked. Small was joined three kilometres from the finish by Frapporti and the pair were able to open the gap up a little again. The American outsmarted the Italian in the finale, she powered away in the finishing straight, giving herself time for a victory salute as she coasted across the finishing line. Monia Baccaille took the bunch sprint ahead of Bronzini and Barbara Guarischi (Fassa Bortolo Servetto).
"It seemed it would be impossible to break away from the bunch, the race was tightly controlled," Small said afterwards, "The break which went in seventh lap was crucial. There were eleven of us and they allowed us to get away," she continued. "In the last lap my legs very good, I was strong, so I broke away. I went and Frapporti joined me, I was worried about her in the sprint. I decided to go again in the closing kilometres. I needed those few meters crucial to be able to win. For me it's a great start to the year. I know Italy well, I have raced here for several years. This was a great race, it gives me confidence for future success."
