Novilon Euregio Cup - Vos wins in two up sprint

Marianne Vos (Stichting Rabo Women) completed a dream end to the first major week of racing in the Netherlands. Vos won the two-up sprint to the line ahead of Marta Bastianelli (MCipollini Gianbenini). Lizzie Armitstead (AA Drink) crossed the line in third place. Armitstead missed the final attack from Vos and was unable to close the gap. 

Conditions were a little better than the previous day. The sun was shining but the wind had picked up a little. The race was marred however with a number of crashes as the massive peloton, (177 starts from 32 teams) navigated the narrow dutch roads and some 33 Dremples (raised road humps).

A early solo attack from Inge Roggeman (Sengers Ladies)lasted over 50km before the teams organised themselves for the chase. After 111.5km a leading bunch of 31 riders had formed. Bastianelli attacked the bunch as they navigated the technical streets in Coevorden. She quickly gained a maximum 55 seconds before Vos and Armitstead jumped from the front of the chasing bunch to close the gap. With 20km to go, the whole team of Specialised Lululemon were on the front in an attempt to close the gap to the three leaders. They had no support from the rest of the peloton and could not close the gap.

With 14km to go Vos and Armitstead had closed the gap to Bastianelli and the three worked well together to stay away. The peloton seemed to have given up the chase and fell back to 1 minute 30 seconds. 

At 6km to go Vos attacked, Bastianelli dropped the wheel initially but managed to drag herself back to Vos. Armitstead missed the attack and was unable to catch the two leaders.

In the end Vos was too strong for Bastianelli. She kicked with 200m to go and crossed the line with time to celebrate. Bastianelli crossed the line 2 seconds later. Armitstead crossed the line for third, 1 minute 31 seconds back. 

In the bunch sprint, MCipollini Giambenini's Monia Baccaille crossed the line 2 minutes 26 seconds back.
