Race 3 - Rhodes attacks and secures victory, Arndt wins Overall

Unley, Adelaide

Race Writeup

Alexis Rhodes (GreenEDGE) attacked in her trade mark style to win the final race in Unley. Team mate Judith Arndt, won the sprint for second ahead of Loren Rowney (Specialised SA Lululemon). Arndt just needed to finish ahead of the Rebecca Werner (Specialised SA) to secure the overall and she did this easily. Werner could only manage 9th across the line.

GreenEDGE-AIS dominated the final race. The had the numbers with Claudia Hausler deciding to ride her first race for the team. Amanda Spratt, Rowena Fry, Rhodes, Loes Gunnewijk, Tiffany Cromwell and Jessie Maclean started the final race. GreenEDGE sent attack after attack off the front of the bunch to wear down the rest. Gracie Elvin, Grace Sulzberger and Sinead Noonan (Jayco-AIS) tried had to break up the rhythm but could not succeed. Taryn Heather (SAIS) chased down many of the attacks. Loren Rowney and Chloe Hosking (Specialised SA Lululemon) tried hard to protect the leaders jersey for their team mate Werner. In the end though numbers and power won over. Rhodes attacked with 4 laps to go. With her team back in the bunch protecting any significant chases, Rhodes finished 100m ahead of the bunch. Arndt jumped early and secured second place and valuable points to put her in the overall lead.

Werner who had led the series from day on could only managed 9th. As she crossed the line she acknowledge the prowess of Arndt.

Alexis Rhodes (GreenEDGE) won the final final stage in her trade mark move, off the front at the final stage of the Santos cup, "Yeah Iím not much of a sprinter so thatís sort of my only tactic but yeah it works occasionally," said Rhodes about her lone attack from 4 laps from the finish. "I guess for us to wrap it up overall, we had confidence and knew that and also to get a stage victory upon us was kind of important as well," added Rhodes.

Rhodes was asked how she felt about having Gerry [Ryan] watching? , "Itís always fantastic to have Gerry here. Obviously to have the teamís financial backer here itís a bit of added incentive to perform."

Rhodes announced her retirement at the end of the 2012 season during the team launch, "Iíve been at it for a long time and itís nice to come back to Australia and hang out with my family.  I miss them more and more when Iím over in Europe and yeah I think itís time. Itís nice to go out on a good year; well hopefully it will be a good year."

Judith Arndt (GreenEDGE-AIS) was asked what the plan was going into today's race? "Just try for one of us to win," said Arndt.

When Alexis [Rhodes] attacked Arndt was asked if she thought that she could stay away? "Oh yeah, she is a very strong rider. I was pretty confident," said Arndt.

On wrapping up the overall series? "It was very tight between the first and second place riders at the start of today. I didn't even know. It's nice, I mean really after the first day, we had a little bit of problems and that, but nice it worked out," added Arndt
