Round Up

The Australian track nationals at the end of January provided an insight into preparations in this Olympic year. With the Track World Cup in the London Olympic velodrome looming large on the horizon in February, riders were under pressure to perform to selector's requirements. A victory did not necessarily gain selection, but a performance to target was important for every rider competing for a position on the team.

Anna Meares dominated the sprint events, winning the sprint and the keirin. She also took the team sprint with South Australia partner, Rikki Belder. Her usual partner, Karlee McCulloch, won the 500 metre time trial, which Meares did not contest.

In the endruance events, West Australia won the team pursuit and Isabella King (WA) won the scratch race ahead of Annette Edmondson (South Asutralia). Edmondson then went on to the next session to ride the fastest 3000 metre pursuit on Australian soil in the qualifying round. Later that evening, she went on to contest the final against Ashlee Ankudinoff and rode even faster to win the gold medal. Edmondson then completed her dream championships with a victory in the points race. 

Annette Edmondson was recognised as Champion of Champion after her multiple victories. Taylah Jennings (Queensland) was the best under 19 competitor and in addition to her individual medals, she was given the best under 19 athlete award.
