Final In the ride for Gold, the Chinese pair of Jinjie Gong and Shuang Guo dominated the Team Sprint ahead of the British pair of Vicki Pendleton and Jess Varnish. In the ride for Bronze, France was .008 seconds faster than the Dutch pair. Sandie Clair set the fastest first lap to set up Clara Sanchez for her lap. Qualifying Fourteen teams started the Team Sprint, the favourites were mixed throughout the schedule. The Dutch, started in the second pairing. The pair of Yvonne Hijgenaar and Willy Kanis, set the fastest time early on. They had to wait until the British pairing of Vicki Pendleton and Jess Varnish before they were beaten. Varnish set a fast first lap and handed over to Pendleton who set the fastest time ever on Australian soil of 33.443 seconds. This record did not last long however, the Chinese pair of Jinjie Gong and Shuang Guo finished their ride in 33.320 creating a new Australian all-comers record. The final pairs to ride were the French duo, Sandie Clair and Clara Sanchez qualified third fastest ahead of the Dutch.
Shuang
Guo (China) was very pleased with the teams performance in the
sprint. “We are very happy to have Gold. Finally we are leading
this competition. I think we can keep this going and go faster,”
said Guo. Silver
medalist, Vicki Pendleton (Great
Britain), was very happy to be racing again in Melbourne. “It
is good to be back,” said Pendleton. Reflecting
on her poor start, Pendelton added, “I had a really crappy start
in the final. I was let go a little too early and I had to balance myself
then start which meant I had to chase Jess [Varmish]. I am not experienced
enough toput my hand up and show that I wasn’t ready. I will learn that
for next time.” “It
is really important for us to be in the top 5 European nation for the
Olympics. With Jess being a fairly new member fo the team and
usbeinga new partnership, I think we did really well,” she
added.
