Stage 1 Neerrijnen - Ophemert, 114.3km
The rain was not as bad as had been forecast, but the wind was cold and strong for the first stage of the 2011 event. The parcours was based upon high, exposed dike roads along the water, this meant that there would be little respite for the competitors from the biting wind. The pace was forced immediately, from 'kilometre zero'. Emma Johansson (Hitec Products) was the protagonist, but following her were others who either had the same plan, or guessed hers and decided it was a good one. Within the first 6km, the bunch was strung out, with over two minutes from the head to the tail of the peloton. By kilometre eight, the break was made. There were fifteen riders in it, including five (of six) from the AA Drink team. On a flat stage for the sprinters, they were working to deliver their fast woman, Kirsten Wild, to the line for victory. Alongside Johansson were : Blaak, Brand, van den Broek, Wild and Worrack (AA Drink), Duester and Vos (Nederland Bloeit), Knetemann (Batavus), Presti (Top Girls), Hosking and Teutenberg (HTC-HighRoad), Bras (Dolmans Landscaping), Olds (Diadora-Pasta Zara) and Cliff-Ryan (USA), The break steadily built its lead until it had gained 2 minutes. The fifteen were working hard and working together. At thrity kilometres, a small group of riders were over seven minutes behind the leaders, they were stopped, their tour was over. After 37km, the what was left of the bunch had lost its spirit and although a few chases were initiated, it seemed clear that the decisive break had been made. The break continued to work all the way through the three final finishing laps of an eight kilometre circuit. There were a couple of attacks, but nothing eventuated and so the group raced to the finish. The final couple of kilometres included a descent from the high road into a small town, with some associated turns, then after a final turn 500 metres from the line, a wide finishing straight. Marianne Vos came out of the corner and shot across to the barriers. Teutenberg and Wild were on her wheel. Although Teutenberg was close, Vos had time to celebrate before the line, Wild was third. The remainder of the break coasted over the line and the bunch followed two minutes later.
