Stage 2 Middelburg - Vlissingen, 104,5km
The stage was run off in cold, windy conditions. Although threatening, the rain didn't actually fall, which would have added to a tense, fast race on the narrow roads of Zeeland. There were constant attacks throughout the stage, several different breaks included riders from the same three teams - Nederland Bloeit, Skil Koga and AA Drink. Race leader, Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit) seemed happy to stay in the bunch, shadowed for the large part, by second placed on General Classificaiton, Kirsten Wild (AA Drink). The decisive break was made with about 20 kilometres to go, it contained Sarah Duester (Nederland Bloeit), young rider competition leader, Amy Pieters (Skil Koga) and the deserved most aggressive rider on the stage, Chantal Blaak (AA Drink). Blaak was active in several of the attacks during the stage. The trio gained a lead of 25 seconds maximum and true to form, the bunch chase closed the advantage as the closing kilometres were covered. However, as the three turned into the final 300m, the finishing straight in Vlissingen, they were still 15 seconds clear. Chantal Blaak (AA Drink) was clearly the strongest of the three and had ample time to celebrate her win in the gloom of the grey evening dusk. Duester (Nederland Bloeit) was second and Amy Pieters (Skil) third. Bonifications on the finish line were enough to transfer the young rider competition lead from Pieters to Blaak. Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit) protected her race lead by leading the bunch sprint. She led Kirsten Wild (AA Drink) over the line.
