Marianne Vos
(Nederland Bloeit) soloed to victory and as race leader, she extended her
grip on the race lead on Stage 2 in Bira.
The race was
marked by a breakaway by three riders - Lucinda Brand (AA Drink),
Elizabeth Armitstead (Garmin) and Loes Gunnewijk (Nederland Bloeit). They
were away for about 50 kilometres, over the middle two climbs on the
parcours. Their maximum advantage was almost two minutes. However, they
were chased hard by the HTC-HighRoad team, which went to the front in
their entirety to try to close the gap for prospective GC challenger,
Judith Arndt.
HTC-Highroad
had brought the gap back to within 20 seconds when the race descended
prior to the final climb. The race came back together and a counterattack
from the race leader, Vos was quickly established. She accelerated away
from the bunch and climbed alone to the finish line. For the final,
flat 750 metres, she was alone and although on the finishing straight, the
bunch could see her, the Dutchwoman had enough of an advantage to take the
stage.
It was a
telling sign of Vos' greater aspirations, she maintained her pace right
through to the finish line, effectively "banking" seconds on
general classification before the 7 kilometre uphill time trial on
Saturday morning. Emma Johansson (Hitech Products) took the bunch sprint
from Judith Arndt (HTC Highroad).
