Stage 1 Martinborough to Masterton, 95km
Judith Arndt (HTC-HighRoad) returned to the race she last won in 2007 with a win on the first stage. The cisrcuit which runs from Homebush to Gladstone includes a testing climb for this time of year, which suits the climbers. Arndt broke away with team-mate, Amber Neben and six others on the final climb, about 20 kilometres from the finish. The break was joined by three more riders about ten kilometres from the line. The descent from the climb is fast and the road rolls from Gladstone to Masterton, which means that a determined chase group can usually close small gaps on those in front. Arndt was led out by Neben at the finish in Masterton, where she beat Catherine Cheatley (NZ National) to take the stage win and the first leader's jersey of the 2011 tour.
