Stage 3 Al Dayaan - Dohar Corniche, 95km
Ellen van Dijk and her HTC-HighRoad team-mates watched the moves, which began after 40km, when the race arrived in Doha. Then, they brought the race back together, allowing van Dijk to finish in the bunch and take overall victory in all competitions on offer in the race. A solo by Megan Gaurnier (USA) and then a counter-attack by Valentina Bastianelli (Vaiano) and Roxanne Knetemann (Skil) were allowed to run their course, brought back by other ambitious riders, keen for a stage win. Then, ten riders went away and quickly gained forty seconds. The HTC-HighRoad women went to the front and set the pace for several laps of the Doha Corniche finishing circuit. Timed to perfection, the break was caught in the closing couple of kilometres, leaving a bunch sprint as the finale. The sprinters fought it out, Bronzini and Gilmore were looking for consolation after their Stage 1 success which was wiped out when they missed the break on Stage 2. Perhaps it was pride, maybe adrenaline, also in the mix was race leader, Ellen van Dijk, elbow to elbow with Italian, Monia Baccaille (MCippollini). In the end, it was the Italian Champion who took the line first, followed by Bronzini and Gilmore, but van Dijk was fourth, safe enough to take the overall.
