Hosking wins Rendition Homes- Santos Women's Cup

Race Writeup

Chloe Hosking (HTC-Highroad) won the first round of the Rendition Homes -Santos Cup ahead of Rochelle Gilmore (Honda) and Annette Edmondson (SA).

Women's racing made a positive return the Santos Tour Down Under event. The Rendition Homes - Santos Women's Cup, was run prior the main elite men's event.. The women raced on the same circuit as the Cancer Council Classic and were a great show case for Australian women's racing.

Riding in her new Australian Criterium championship jersey Lauren Kitchen (Jayco AIS) was on the front with her team early on and even tried to break away. Rochelle Gilmore (Honda) was protected in the bunch with her team doing much of the work to close the gaps when the attacks went.

A small group of 8 riders tried to get away at the half way stage of the race, that included Joanne Hogan (Jayco VIS), Sinead Noonan (NSW) and Peta Mullens (Honda).

They could not manage to stay away but it wasn't long before another attack went, this time it was Kitchen, Alex Carle (Jayco AIS) and Carlee Taylor (Tibco). Again the attack was closed down,( this time by Tiffany Cromwell (Honda).

With three laps to go Taryn Heather (SA), the silver medalist in the Australian time trial championships attempted to move off the front. She managed a 20m gap but could not get away.

With two laps to go the bunch were all together. At the bell, the Honda team were on the front with the Jayco AIS team. With 500m to go the sprint started. The Honda team and Gilmore were on the right with Edmondson. Hosking found a gap at 50m to go and opened up her sprint to take the win.

Post Race Comments

Chloe Hosking (HTC-Highroad) was very happy to win the first stage of the Rendition Homes-Santos Women's Cup, "It is great after the Bay Crits and Nationals to get a win on the board a couple of weeks into 2011. I was a little far back and fluked it really. there was a SASI girl causing a bit of confusion for the Honda so I took advantage of it. They were on the right so I went left and got clear," said Hosking.
