Pursuit Final- Sarah Hammer returns to top form
Sarah Hammer (USA) regained her status as the best pursuiter in the World, when she rode to a best time of 3:28.601 in Copenhagen. Wendy Houvenaghel (GBR) won silver but never looked like she would trouble Hammer. In the fight for Bronze, the Lithuanian Vilija Sereikaite won ahead of the 2009 champions Alison Shanks (NZL)
Sarah Hammer (USA) was extremely happy to have won her second World title in the Pursuit. Nearing retirement due to a back injury, Hammer has fought back to the top again. "The victories are all sweet in their own way, but this one, I think I am more able to enjoy than the last one. When I crossed the line this time, I remember everything," said Hammer. "I was contemplating quitting after the last one [2007 World Championships]. I stopped riding and then I decided to start riding again. I came back with a completely different attitude, I am enjoying everything. It takes a lot of time to maintain my back. I can't just get on my bike and ride," she added. "I got married last year and on our honeymoon, Andy (Sparks) got offered the job at the UCI Track Development centre and that took it from just coming back to actually getting involved in the development of young talent. It has been an amazing experience for me to be there. To work with the young riders and be part of such a great facility is awesome. I try every day to help the young girls understand what it takes to compete at this level and by my actions hopefully they will learn to become World class athletes," said Hammer. Wendy Houvenaghel (GBR) was a little disappointed with another Silver medal. "I performed to the very best of my ability, but on the day, Sarah Hammer was just better. I gave it my all ad delivered a world class performance, that is all I can ask of myself," said Houvenaghel. Looking to the Team Pursuit, Houvenaghel added, "Our objective is to win the race tomorrow, we are capable of a World record time. Tomorrow, Joanne Rowsell will lead out, Lizzy Armitstead will ride in second wheel and I will bring up the rear at the start." Vilija Sereikaite (LTU) was very please with her Bronze medal. "This means so much to me, I have worked very hard for this," she said.
