Thüringen Rundfahrt 2010 20-25 July
Vera Hohlfeld, who has acted for the past several years as Sports Director on the Thüringen Rundfahrt has stepped up to take over as Race Director for the 23rd edition of the race. She takes over from Nico Kleinert, who has taken the difficult decision to step down from his post as director of the group which runs the race.
Kleinert took over direction of the event in 2007 and was in charge for three editions, 2007-2009 inclusive.
Hohlfeld was a German international road star in the 1990's. She rode professionally and represented her country at the Atlanta Olympics, where she finished fourth.
"I've only had a short while to reflect upon this new challenge," Hohlfeld commented, "But now I'm excited by the task at hand, especially since I know that I can rely on a well-rehearsed and proven management team which has run the Thüringen Rundfahrt for many years and knows it inside-out."
Indeed, Hohlfeld is no stranger to the race either. In her twelve starts, she won seven stages and took second overall in 1996.
The future of the race look promising. Hohlfeld confirmed that the local government and long-standing sponsors are standing by the event "Cycling has a long tradition in Thuringia and the tour has always been an excellent competition. In the future we will maintain and expand this reputation. The tour is pure advertising for Thuringia."
The strength of the race's future is in its management and relationships with the region and sponsors. In addition to the promotion of Hohlfeld to the Race Director position, talks are currently being held with an as yet un-named former rider to join the management group.
