Stage 9 - Abbott wins tough climb to Stelvio Livigno - Stelvio 68.5 km
Mara Abbott (USA) rode solo to the top of the Stelvio climb to secure her lead in the Giro Donne after 9 stages. Emma Pooley (Cervelo Test Team) and Judith Arndt (HTC Columbia). Amber Neben (USA) crashed on the decent of the Tre Palle, the first of the Cat. 1 climbs. With 15 km to go to the finish, what was left of the peloton, a group of 15 riders, formed the leading group. Abbott attacked the group on the tough climb to Stelvio leaving a splintered peloton behind her. Pooley reacted and gave chase as did Arndt.
