Stage 3a- Vos wins by two bike lengths

Iurreta - Zuia 78.7 km

Race Writeup

Marianne Vos (Netherland Bloiet) won her second stage in the Iurretta-emakumeen Bira in convincing style ahead of Emma Johansson (Redsun Cycling) and Eleonora Patuzzo  (Safi - Pasta Zara).

Judith Arndt (HTC Columbia) finished fourth to maintain a 12 second advantage over claudia Hausler (Cervelo Test Team).

The conditions for the second race, the 78.7km route, from Iurreta to Zuia, were also very tricky on a tough course. Despite a number of attacks the race gradually split, more as a result of the conditions and natural attrition. As the race approached the start of 2nd Cat climb at Elgabide, a group of about fifty riders formed that included all the top riders.

This group splintered on the climb with a small group but pretty much stayed together until the final 1km. Vos was the clear winner in the sprint, she even had time to look over her shoulder to the chase.

Post Race Comments

Egon van Kessel, Sports Director knows his team has some work to do to beat Judith Arndt for the overall,  "We had two stages today, a morning time trial won by Nicole Cooke, and though Claudia rode well she is now 12 seconds behind Judith Arndt for the GC," said van Kessel. "Noteworthy in this morning's time trial was the performance of Patricia Schwager (SUI) today in this difficult mountain stage. Patricia finished in tenth spot but she rode very well and was much better than the results showed."

"This afternoon it was a normal stage with one category 2 climb. At the end there was a group of about 50 riders with four of our team in this group. Then at the end six riders escaped, thought they only had 10-15 seconds on the bunch and this contained all the main riders including Claudia. She is still in second and
tomorrow's final stage will be another hard one with more mountains, especially towards the end of the race about 10km from the finish. We want to win this and we will try very hard tomorrow to do just that."
