Wild wins,
after solo Johansson was swept up on finishing circuit
Race
Writeup
Kirsten Wild (Cervélo
Test Team) won the Tour of Gelderland today, when the race came down to a
mass sprint finish. Wild had the fastest legs winning ahead of Rochelle
Gilmore (Lotto Ladies) and Kirsty Broun (AUS) the two strong Aussie
sprinters.
Brooke Miller
(TIBCO) continued to move up the rankings finishing with another strong
performance in 4th (and top American rider) with Anne Arnouts of Red Sun
Cycling filling out the top 5.
The 141
kilometers race in it's 45th edition was an out and back affair with the
start and finish in Apeldoorn. The bunch had to climb the demanding hilly
circuit twice. It included in the climb of Zijpe Berg. This is where Emma
Johansson (Red Sun Cycling) attacked. She held onto her lead until the
Cervelo Test Team began the chase.
With three
circuits of the 8.8 km circuit that included the climb of the Torenberg (Soerenseweg) to really stretch the legs of the chasing peloton.
The race was
ridden without radios, under the new UCI rules which added to the
expectation that the teams had to work within the bunch to communicate and
control the race. It was the Cervelo Test Team who controlled much of the
pace and the chase to close the gaps. Thus delivering the squad and
their sprinter Wild to a mass sprint.
