Pursuit Final- Alison Shanks wins World title for New Zealand.

New Zealander Alison Shanks was a surprised winner of the World Championship jersey in the Individual Pursuit. The dominance of the British team was abated by the performance of the New Zealander. Qualifying in second place earlier in the day, Shanks started at an even pace and gradually increased her speed to takethe victory.

Wendy Houvenaghel (GBR) traditionally starts slowly and finished fast but today could not match the speed of Shanks.

In the ride for Bronze, Vilija Serekaite (Lithuania) won by a clear 2 seconds to the other British rider in the finals the young Joanne Rowsell.

Post Race Comments

Allison Shanks (NZL) was over the moon to have won her first ever world title. "I can't believe it, it hasn't really sunk in yet. I am sure it will when I stand on the podium and put on the jersey," said Shanks. Shanks was asked if she thought the World Record time of Sarah Ulmer was beatable, she added, "I think so, you just have to keep chipping away at it and I think someone will get there eventually."
