Stage 4 - Wild wins again Rijssen - Rijssen 124,8km
Kirstin Wild (Cervelo Test Team) showed real power in the bunch sprint to the line ahead of Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Team Columbia HTC) and Suzanne de Geode (Equipe Nurnberger). The weather was again mixed for the start of stage 4. Early rain threatened and came and made the conditions difficult for the riders. Some breaks in the cloud allowed the sun to shine but not for too long. The breaks came early when 2 riders, Loes Markerink (Team Flexpoint) and Monique van der Ree (Leontien.nl) attacked after the first 15 km. They managed to gain a gap of one and half minutes, before Cervelo Test Team riders moved to the front of the bunch to chase Markerink and van de Ree. The Cervelo team worked hard and caught the leaders with 15 km to go. Attack after attack then started from the bunch splintering it into groups. A lead group of 38 riders formed that included Wild, Vos, Teutenberg and Emma Johannson (Red Sun) as well as De Goede. Wild could not be stopped in the final 50m though and took her third victory of the tour. Ellen van Dijk (Team Columbia-HTC) led the bunch sprint for home. Marianne Vos (DSB Bank) holds the young rider competition lead, while Monique van de Ree (Leontien.nl) is in the sprints jersey and Wild holds the points jersey as well as the overall.
Kirstin Wild (Cervelo Test Team) was very happy to win again, "It was my third victory, but I still cannot get used to it,” said Wild, who received extra motivation today to win again, as the race passed very close to her home. “To beat Teutenberg is not easy, she is usually the best. I enjoy every stage victory and I will do my best again tomorrow. Sunday will be the real challenge because the stage, in the south Netherlands, is a difficult one. But I don't give up easily and usually riders like Marianne Vos will try and take the power there. But with three stage victories and four days in the leader's jersey, I'm not complaining.” Jens
Zemke, Sports Director was very happy with his teams performance, "After
the first 15 km there was a break away with 2 riders, Loes Markerink (Team
Flexpoint) and Monique van der Ree (Leontien.nl)," said Zemke.
"When the gap got to around one and half minutes, our team
started to chase them. We caught them and brought the duo back with about
15 km to go. Then we had to cover all the attacks and in the finale we
provided the lead out for Kirstens' sprint and she was able to win again.
Marianne Vos was second and Suzanne de Goede (Equipe Nürnberger
Versicherung) third. Kirsten took 6 seconds on Vos and sits first in the
GC with a 19 second lead.
