Stage 1 Rieux Minervois, 115km
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg re-wrote the record books on Stage 1. She won the stage in a bunch sprint and took the record for the most stage wins. With 16 victories to her name since 1997, she used her experience and knowledge of the race to ease her efforts. She was also grateful to her team, which took the front with 40 km to go. They were working hard to bring back a solo break by Vikki Whitelaw (Vision 1 Racing).. Despite having a gap of 4 minutes at one point, the Australian was reeled in with just 4 kilometres to go. A consolation, perhaps, is that she takes over the lead in the mountains competition.
Ina-Yoko
Teutenberg : “It was a real team effort today, in the
last 40 kilometres all the riders had to work very hard to pull back a
break,” Teutenberg said afterwards. “It was a flat stage, but only in
comparison to the rest of the stages of the Tour de L’Aude - this
whole race is always hilly.” “It
worked out perfectly. We caught the break with four kilometres to go and
then Chantal Beltman led me up to 500 metres to the finish, I followed
wheels and took off from there. I knew the finish from other years, this is
a stage they have had lots of times in the Tour de L’Aude, so that was an
advantage, too.” Manel
Lacambra (DS, Cervelo Test Team) : It
was today a easy day for us, because we expected that the race would end in a
bunch sprint" said Sport Director Manel Lacambra. "And because our
sprinter Kirsten Wild isn't here and our main goal is the GC, we tried to stay
safe and healthy for the Team Time Trial tomorrow. The stage was 116 KM with
start and finish in Rieux Minervois and it was pretty hot, around 25 degrees.
During the race there was a long break from Vicky Whitelaw ( Vision Racing) and
the biggest time gap was almost 4 minutes. Whitelaw stayed long ahead and some
teams were a little bit nervous but Columbia chased her back in the last
kilometre.
