Race 3

Gran Premio Comuni di Santa Luce Castellina Marittima

Race Writeup

In a two-up sprint between riders from two of the sport's top teams, Linda Villumsen (Columbia) took victory over Modesta Vzesniauskaite (Bigla Cycling Team). After the climb of Riparbella about twenty riders were away, incluyding: Marianne Vos (Dutch National) and Nicole Cooke (Vision 1 Racing), along with Noemi Cantele and Nicole Brandli (Bigla Cycling Team). Also there were: Fabiana Luperini (Selle Italia Ghezzi), Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo Test Team), Linda Villumsen (Team Columbia High Road), Emma Johansson (Red Sun Cycling), Grace Verbeke (Lotto Belisol) and Andrea Bossman ( Holland National).

On the intermediate climb of Castellina Marittima, Lithuanian Vzesniauskaite broke away. She was never able to get more than a minute ahead and by the summit, Team Columbia's Villumsen had given chase. She caught Vzesniauskaite and it was the pair who headed in to the finish at Castellina for a head-to-head sprint. Villumsen took the win, her first since her victory in the Danish road Championships in June 2008.

One minute 11 seconds later, Emma Johansson (Red Sun) took the bunch sprint ahead of Noemi Cantele (Bigla Cyclnig Team) and Cantele's team-mate, Brandli (fifth).

Post Race Comments

Linda Villumsen (Team Columbia) Vzesniauskaite got away alone, then I bridged across in the last part of the race. Id felt pretty good over the last couple of days racing, so I was feeling confident, which helped. Plus the weather was a lot better.

We went up the last five kilometre climb together and I led all the way to the line. It wasnt super-steep. I knew the climb from my training rides with Chantal [Beltman, Columbia-Highroad team-mate] so I knew what to expect, which was an advantage.

I was pretty sure I was going to get it because Vzesniauskaute just followed my wheel and seemed pretty tired, but you never know because sprinting is not my thing.

As it was, I just kept going, led in from the front, and crossed the line in first place. Im really pleased because this is my first win of 2009 and my first since taking the Danish road national championships title last year.

Villumsen dedicated the win to her Columbia-Highroad team-mates, saying theyre the people that give me the motivation to win.

Ronny Lauke (Directeur Sportif, Team Columbia) Im really pleased for Linda, shes always sacrificing her own interests for those of the team, and she fully deserved take this win.

In the last two days racing Linda was consistently in the action so its great that finally she got the chance to celebrate a win for herself. It was a really tough race, too, with a lot of climbing and attacking. She really had to work hard for this one

Modesta Vzesniauskaite (Bigla Cycling Team): "I am disappointed because we wanted to win. I attacked from a distance, but I felt good in the final climb I kept my pace and Villumsen grew very strong indeed. Sprinting then she is usually fast. However, it is an excellent start to the season for me, I have won in France and I look with confidence to the next "

Nicole Cooke (Vision 1 Racing) - Olympic champion and World Champion: "As always these Tuscan races were wonderful in all respects. The courses were very technical and the women who have a good condition have been very strong. I must congratulate those who won and the organisation of the Trofeo Costa Etrusca."
