Stage 1 Prologue, Redland to Sunset Drive, 5km 2009
edition of the Redlands Bicycle Classic had the largest
number of entrants ever in the women’s field and also one of the most
prestigious fields. The women’s field read as a ‘who’s-who’ of
women’s cycling. Some of the A-List women that started the race were Laura
Van Gilder, Amber Neben, Mara Abbott, Kim Anderson, Rebecca Much, Emilia
Fahlin, Brooke Miller, Alison Powers, Ina Tutenberg, Kat Carroll, Tina Pic,
and Alex Wrubleski. Among the riders there was no less than five current
national champions, one current world champion, the current NRC champion and
over 20 race wins between them in 2008 alone. The first stage,
included five technical kilometres of time trialing. The course went from
downtown With a winning
time that spanned 25+ seconds to second place finisher Mara Abott (Team
Columbia Highroad Women), Neben (Nurnberger-Sho-Air),
the current World Time Trial Champion, ripped up the challenging prologue
course to post the incredible time of 10 minutes 40.67 seconds. The
question now is whether Neben’s team can do the work for the rest of the
race. The American switched to the German Nurnberger squad in the off
season. She is racing at Teammates Mara
Abbott and Ina Yoko Teutenberg (Team Columbia Highroad Women) rode
incredibly strong posting finishing times within a single second of each
other at 11 minutes 7.55 seconds and 11 minutes 7.84 seconds respectively.
Rounding out the top five was Alison Power of Team Type 1 (11 minutes 18.50
seconds) and Katheryn Mattis (Webcor Builders Cycling) (11 minutes 42.15
seconds. Amber Neben (Nurnberger Sho-Air) was very proud to be showing off ner new World Time Trial Champions jersey. Reflecting on the prologue “I wouldn’t say it was a surprise, even though I don’t come into this race with peak form,” Neben said. “It’s a time trial and I still expect a lot out of myself. I felt like I was capable of winning today. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy," she added Mara
Abbott (Team Columbia Highroad Women) was happy to get 4th on
the TT, “It’s a course I’ve done a few times before and I really
like it,” Abbott said. Abbott finished just one second ahead of
her Columbia-Highroad teammate Ina Yoko Teutenberg. The German took the
overall win at last week’s Ina
