Stage 1

Prologue, Redland to Sunset Drive, 5km

Race Writeup

2009 edition of the Redlands Bicycle Classic had the largest number of entrants ever in the women’s field and also one of the most prestigious fields. The women’s field read as a ‘who’s-who’ of women’s cycling. Some of the A-List women that started the race were Laura Van Gilder, Amber Neben, Mara Abbott, Kim Anderson, Rebecca Much, Emilia Fahlin, Brooke Miller, Alison Powers, Ina Tutenberg, Kat Carroll, Tina Pic, and Alex Wrubleski. Among the riders there was no less than five current national champions, one current world champion, the current NRC champion and over 20 race wins between them in 2008 alone.

The first stage, included five technical kilometres of time trialing. The course went from downtown Redlands to the top of Sunset Drive, it wasn’t long but it packed a serious punch in the form of 1000 feet of elevation gain, most of it within the final steep kilometre.

With a winning time that spanned 25+ seconds to second place finisher Mara Abott (Team Columbia Highroad Women), Neben (Nurnberger-Sho-Air), the current World Time Trial Champion, ripped up the challenging prologue course to post the incredible time of 10 minutes 40.67 seconds. The question now is whether Neben’s team can do the work for the rest of the race. The American switched to the German Nurnberger squad in the off season. She is racing at Redlands on a composite team called Nurnberger-Sho-Air. The team is comprised of three Nurnberger teammates, two members of the United States Women’s Cycling Development Program (USWCDP) and a local rider.

Teammates Mara Abbott and Ina Yoko Teutenberg (Team Columbia Highroad Women) rode incredibly strong posting finishing times within a single second of each other at 11 minutes 7.55 seconds and 11 minutes 7.84 seconds respectively. Rounding out the top five was Alison Power of Team Type 1 (11 minutes 18.50 seconds) and Katheryn Mattis (Webcor Builders Cycling) (11 minutes 42.15 seconds.

Post Race Comments

Amber Neben (Nurnberger Sho-Air) was very proud to be showing off ner new World Time Trial Champions jersey. Reflecting on the prologue “I wouldn’t say it was a surprise, even though I don’t come into this race with peak form,” Neben said. “It’s a time trial and I still expect a lot out of myself. I felt like I was capable of winning today. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy," she added

Mara Abbott (Team Columbia Highroad Women) was happy to get 4th on the TT, “It’s a course I’ve done a few times before and I really like it,” Abbott said. Abbott finished just one second ahead of her Columbia-Highroad teammate Ina Yoko Teutenberg. The German took the overall win at last week’s San Dimas stage race after taking the lead from Abbott, who won the opening time trail.

Ina Yoko Teutenberg (Team Columbia Highroad Women) said she liked Columbia-Highroad’s chances in Redlands .“It will be hard work to beat Neben,” Teutenberg said. “I have to go out and get the time bonuses now from everybody. I was planning to do that anyway. (Sunday’s) Sunset Road Race is a hard race to control, especially if you don’t have your team around," added Teutenberg
