Broun takes second consecutive criterium title Cronulla Criterium, New South Wales Kirsty Broun (MB Cycles), outsprinted Rochelle Gilmore to win the Cronulla Australian Criterium Championships. The 2009 event was run in warm but windy conditions on the beachside circuit. Broun’s win was her second consecutive National title and her third win in the Cronulla event. The field was missing some of the top Australian riders, including recent double Champion, Alexis Rhodes, who would normally compete for the criterium title, but it did include some of the young, developing riders like Megan Dunn and Sky-lee Armstrong. The strong wind made it difficult for any one rider to get away on the rolling circuit on the beach front in Cronulla and the bunch stayed together until the final lap. Although there were some attempts off the front in the closing laps by MB Cycles’ Liz Young.
Kirsty Broun was excited to have won her second National Criterium Championship title. “I can’t thank MB Cycles enough, they have supported me for the last 3 years, and my team mate [Gina Grain] gave me a great lead out. The wind was coming from all directions which made it really difficult to attack and get away”.
Results - Top 3 1 Kirsty Broun (MK Cycles) 2 Rochelle Gilmore (HP Teschner)
